5 things to know about the DRDO’s anti Covid19 drug, 2-DG

2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG), an anti-covid-19 drug which has recently been developed by India and approved by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) got rolled out in the country in May’21 to treat patients moderate to severely affected by the Corona Virus.

At a time when the nation is battling with the deadly second wave of Covid-19 pandemic and where thousands of people, young, old alike are succumbing to the disease, this drug comes a hope to the already exhausted healthcare system of India.

  1. Anti-Covid-19 drug, 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) is developed by the Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (INMAS), a laboratory of Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), in association with the pharma giant, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories (DRL) in Hyderabad.


  2. It will be used in emergency cases as an adjunct therapy in moderate to severely affected coronavirus patients.


  3. It works by accumulating the virus infected cells thus preventing virus growth by stopping viral synthesis and energy production.


  4. The drug is in powder form to be available in sachets and should be taken orally by dissolving it in water.


  5. Clinical trial results established that the molecule present in the drug helps in quicker recovery of hospitalised patients and decreases supplemental reliance on oxygen.
