Cyclone Yass to Hit East Coast of India on May 26 in 2021
Cyclone Yass forming over the Bay of Bengal is soon to hit the east coast of India. IMD officials as per a new report said they cannot rule out the possibility that Yass will intensify like Amphan.
As a pre-emptive measure the Indian Coast Guard has initiated to evacuate costal establishment and are closely monitoring the developments. They also are instructing fishermen at sea to return to safety in time and further restricting anyone venturing into the sea.
Indian Coast Guard’ radar station in Odisha and West Bengal have started signalling weather warnings over VHF periodically in English and local language to alert fishing boat and merchant vessels operating in the region.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in its forecast has said Yass cyclone is likely to hit the east coast on May 26-27, 2021.
A low-pressure area is likely to form over north Andaman Sea and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal around May 22, it said.
“It is very likely to intensify gradually into a cyclonic storm during the subsequent 72 hours. It is very likely to move north-westwards and reach West Bengal-Odisha coasts around May 26 morning,” the IMD said.
West Bengal, Odisha and adjoining Assam and Meghalaya are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy falls at isolated places from May 25. The intensity of the rainfall will increase substantially, the IMD said.
April-May are the pre-monsoon months that witness formation of cyclones on the eastern as well as the western coast of India. In 2020 May two cyclones — super cyclonic storm Amphan and severe cyclonic storm Nisarga had hit the eastern and western coast, respectively.
